When asked what kind of wood she wanted her hope chest to be made out of, this crazy kid said she didn’t care as long as it was waterproof and golden on the inside. I don’t think it will float when the deluge happens, but I was able to make the interior gold. When these two have a place of their own, we can all have hearts full of cheer knowing that a hope chest won’t be on the wish list. I’m positive that whatever happens to them in the future, whether it’s a bigger family or a dozen more relocations, this chest will stand up to the challenge. Here’s to them!
Having a dining table that’s bigger than the people who live with it is an absolute necessity. Friends and family are all we really have, so when you invite them over, you need to have a place for them to sit as well. Watching somebody eat soup out of their lap is not a pretty sight! Now, this mother and child can have up to six friends over at the same time without any of them feeling unaccommodated.
This is the first of many projects made for the wonderful people over at Safe Shelter Asheville. They provide temporary housing for the most vulnerable families. When a family finds stability and a permanent place to live, they get to take this versatile and compact folding table with them as a housewarming gift. It maximizes the open-close ratio, so I’m confident it will find a useful existence wherever it winds up.
When a hurricane takes your house, what you need most is a new house. Until Hand-Joined Family Furniture expands into timber framing (and we will, one day), the best we can do is replace some of what was lost. This secretary desk is made of beautiful maple for a child who will grow up with it and eventually pass it on, keeping their art supplies dry in the meantime.
This man's daughter is not pictured here. She was out of town the day the sideboard arrived, which was a shame for all of us. Since her dad is visually impaired, this cherry sideboard has a few extra features to help them stay connected. The center panel is magnetic, and when pulled away from the wall the back reveals a large felt board so they can make drawings together using velcro tactile markers. The rounded corners are a quiet bonus: no stubbed toes.
